A single bit
A bit is a single binary digit, either a 0 or 1. At its very lowest level, a computer operates by turning on and off millions of switches, called transistors. Binary refers to a base 2 number system (we use a base 10 system).

From bit to byte
A bit can represent only 2 states. A byte is an 8-bit unit of data. One example is 11001101, or 205. There are 256 possible bytes because each digit has 2 possibilities resulting in 2^8=256 combinations.
